Background of the Study
Environmental accounting is a framework that integrates environmental costs into financial decision-making and reporting. It involves identifying, quantifying, and reporting the environmental impacts of a company’s operations, providing a clearer picture of sustainability practices and resource utilization (Ekong & Adeyemi, 2023).
In Nigeria, the oil and gas industry has come under scrutiny for its environmental impacts, with companies like Chevron Nigeria often facing criticism for pollution and resource degradation. As environmental sustainability becomes a global priority, the adoption of environmental accounting can play a vital role in balancing economic and environmental objectives (Olawale & Udo, 2024).
This study explores the role of environmental accounting in enhancing corporate financial performance, using Chevron Nigeria as a case study.
Statement of the Problem
The environmental degradation caused by oil and gas companies in Nigeria has led to increased regulatory pressures and reputational risks. Despite the growing importance of environmental accounting, its adoption among companies in the sector remains inconsistent (Eze & Nwankwo, 2025).
Chevron Nigeria, as one of the leading oil and gas companies, has implemented some environmental accounting practices. However, there is limited research on the extent to which these practices contribute to financial performance. This study seeks to bridge this gap by examining the relationship between environmental accounting and financial performance in Chevron Nigeria.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the impact of environmental accounting on Chevron Nigeria’s financial performance.
To identify the environmental accounting practices employed by Chevron Nigeria.
To assess the challenges of implementing environmental accounting in Chevron Nigeria.
